Chapter 15
Logan and I were sitting on the bench overlooking the Sound. There were countless sailboats bobbing in the water, and ferries chugging to and from the islands. Off in the distance was the beautiful skyline of Seattle, with the Space Needle and the Smith Tower displayed prominently highlighting the beauty of old and new merging as one. One structure was as space age as it could be, and the other the oldest skyscraper in Seattle. I always thought it would be a dream to get married at the Smith Tower, in an evening ceremony overlooking Seattle’s twinkling lights. The sadness started rushing through my body as I thought about my mom. I long ago discounted never being walked down the aisle by my father, but I never once thought about going through my wedding day without my mom. The lump in my throat was front and center, and I did my best at swallowing to force it down. I leaned my head on Logan, thankful that for the time being, I at least had someone like him on my side. This time, however, I wouldn’t let any dampness escape through to his shirt from my tears. I was stronger than that.
“What’s going on in that head of yours?” Logan asked softly, pressing his lips against my hair.
Not wanting to give him the wrong idea with thoughts of weddings and such, I forced myself to pick one of the many things that it could be.
“Really can’t believe everything that’s gone on,” I sighed.
“I know. Are you feeling up for talking about everything that went down earlier?” his voice gentle.
“Absolutely. As of now I’m at a complete loss. One moment you’re in the crowd, the next you’re coming in through the doors. I had no idea what was going on.” I didn’t want to mention that for a split second, I even wondered if he was involved. Completely disappointed in myself for letting my mind touch on that, I vowed I would never distrust him again.
“I’m still not sure. You know how Brenda gave that box to you? I think they, whoever they are, thought it was going to stay on you. I was sitting there watching the ceremony, and my leg started to burn where the box was touching it. I realized the heat was coming from inside the box, and it had to be calling to someone, creating the bull’s-eye for whomever it was with, obviously with you being the intended target. I snuck out the side entrance and almost as soon as I got outside, I heard the commotion begin inside. I opened up the box, and the pendant was so hot it was glowing. I knew something was about to go down, so I rushed to the front of the building to throw the pendant back at whoever showed up. I didn’t expect five somebodies, however.” He shook his head.
“So Brenda put a curse on that pendant?” I shook my head. “That just doesn’t make sense. Why in the world would she do that? I mean, logic does point to that.
